Europa Universalis IV Third Rome – Russia, The Orthodox Legacy Of Constantinople – Historical Roleplay PC Gameplay Hard Difficulty

We’re starting an intensive Historical Roleplay LP for Europa Universalis IV Third Rome. PC Gameplay on Hard Difficulty. I’m really curious and excited about the new “Immersion Packs” for EUIV and I want to try that one out, together with You 🙂

So, here’s a link to the Playlist, if you just want to get started with the Video part of the Roleplay LP. More about it further down 🙂

Why this focus on History and Roleplay? We want to relive the Spirit of the “Third” or “New” Rome in the early modern Russian states. What defines that spirit?

It is the replacement of the fallen Byzantine Empire. The Ottomans also tried to claim to be the “Third Rome” but while that was a claimable term for their Muslim contemporaries, the Christian story is emphasized in the EUIV DLC. The Orthodox Story, to be concise.

So, after the fall of Constantinople, Moscow gained the “story” of being the “Third” or “New” Rome, partly to the fact that Ivan III had married Sophia Paleologue in 1472. She was a cousin to the last Byzantine Emperor and so “carried his divine rights” in the minds of the people.
Oddly, the first wife of Ivan III was Maria of Tver who died 1467. She also kind of had a claim on the “New Rome” legend as in 1393 a monk has already fled the besieged Byzantine lands to Tver and actually had claimed Tver to be “The New Rome” for its ruler, Boris of Tver.

More on the topic of “Third Rome” can of course be found on Wikipedia. If you have any better links, please send them in the YouTube comments. I’ll include them into the post with a mention of you.

So, the legend was carried to Russia as the keeper of at least the Eastern Christian Faith, the Orthodoxy. Our LP will have much to do with Religious Decisions.

Now – to the Historical part of the LP. It’s impossible to explain everything or look everything up but we will try. I would love to get some input from you as well in the form of links or other content to maybe provide a “historical” introduction into the LP episodes. The schedule will not be that frequent, due to the higher production quality. It will be a comfy LP, with some kind of talking through some of the historically interesting things we discover while playing the game.

Roleplay: I have a distinct idea on how to handle Roleplay in Europa Universalis. Roleplay adds randomness to a LP, which makes it not a streamlined experience leveraging certain gameplay aspects. It makes a great story, a legend of the the making and continuation of plans bound to the characters in our realm, mainly the rulers. It creates a captivating story and it emphasizes personalities.

A ruler with strengths in Diplomacy would act more in the diplomatic realm, a ruler with strengths in Military would probably try to use his or her military more, a ruler with strengths in Administration might reform the country and try to improve it from within. Adding to that are the Personality aspects they added into the game a while ago that will also lead our hand when it comes to state decisions and overall strategies.

Of course every ruler has a will to be successful, we’re not roleplaying “into the blue”. And maybe a successor will want to continue his predecessor’s campaign first, if it looks like it could be a success, and it’s in one of the late(r) stages. These decisions we’ll make depending on the situation.

We have arrived at the first Video. Now, I’ll handle the video posts like this: I’ll give you the title of the video, then put the video below and below the embedded video you’ll find a little description of what is the topic of the video and what will happen. There won’t be new posts, you can just bookmark this page and it will get updated as the episodes fly in. A little bit like a mix of history, description and story. May the LEGEND OF THIRD ROME begin 🙂

  1. Muscovy 1444

We decide the game settings – Hard, Random Lucky Nations, no Fantasy New World and start the game. We explain what we want to do and how the roleplay will go, kind of like the initial paragraph here. We also go into the political position of Muscovy.
We have a lot of vassals and it will be one of our first goals to stabilize the relations with them and control their liberty desire. Also, a little bit of development would do good to reach one of the goals of the Age of Discovery: A Great City. Which city should that be? Of course, Moscow is our candidate here in the future.
Then, we take some rivals and go for the strongest rivals we have a the moment and the most fierce as their relations to us are the worst around: Novgorod and Lithuania. Lithuania because our wife’s grandfather had the Orthodox reign of Lithuania taken from him in his older days and Novgorod because they despise us and are our enemies and we’d really love to have some of their provinces, especially – Novgorod with its trade center.
So this is how we set up our game, how we position for the future 🙂 Let’s hope our plans go well..

  2. Muscovy 1444-1451 Grand Kniaz Vasiliy II. (in progress) ON HOLD, LITTLE BABY JOINED FAMILY SOME WEEKS EARLY 🙂

YouTube Schedule Thoughtful Gaming

Happy to see you 🙂 – 7th of July: – Still giant rework of the channel and the LPs as well as the news videos, AI TOURNAMENT has DISTANT STARS in it, so restarted it (4th / 400 years video coming soon).

Many new results of the analytics research have shown me that a lot will change and has to change. For now, I’m preparing to further SIMPLIFY the SCHEDULE of the LPs. That is only the visible part as I’m also working on video structure, ultimately also graphics and sound and some secret stuff 🙂

Due to the many changes I will to make to everything, the schedule aspired is now “every day” for most series or every 2nd day for “chill series”, except at launches I’m gonna do some episode craziness. Also, when I got time, I’m going to release more episodes, but don’t get used to it too much.

Streaming: I’m streaming on https://www.twitch.tv/thoughtfulgaming/ – me episoding with pauses for your questions (about every 15 minutes) 🙂 Usually 11pm GMT+2 until I need to sleep 😀
Upcoming streaming schedule: Pausing atm for various reasons (upload, kids)

  1. STELLARIS daily 3pm GMT+2, EU4 run is COMPLETE 🙂
  2. AI TOURNAMENT UPDATED TO DISTANT STARS – is a lot of work and has no schedule, so coming slowly, but I’m working on the videos daily.
  3. Pillars of Eternity 2 (upcoming) 6pm GMT+2 is DAILY now. Torment is on an “occasional updates” schedule until winter.
  4. Kingdom Come Deliverance 10pm GMT+2 > – Chill Schedule, may pause – every second day

Once a couple of the changes are done, TWITCH STREAMING will start and combine with the LPs. The goal is to have at least the newer series running on Twitch as well, but of course in a different format and… yes, if you want polished episodes with very good graphics, you should look on YouTube.

I’m integrating Discord as well which takes some time, thank you, Dark Savant (First Leutenant Discord and longtime Sub). Personally, I check Discord when I check comments, so usually every day or every two days.

Some people are always on, I am not a fulltime YouTuber, I have 2 hours each day usually, but not more, so basically I can decide if I chat with 3 persons or if you get 2 or 3 episodes, I hope you understand that 🙂

Hi there friends and fellow thinkers!

We are five now here, so it’s a little crowded and showing. Kids are still so young they’re not in kindergarden for a while that’s why I have to help a lot while working and stuff 😀

Please continue to give me valuable hints about specials you’d like. It’s usually very good topics and if I find the time and think I can do that I’ll gladly do them!

Happy Gaming to you, Immanuel Can

Let’s Play Stellaris: The Cthulhu Myth – a Roleplay and Survive Adventure!

Hi there, fellow Startravellers :)

Stellaris is just too awesome to stay a lurker. So, started a LP with the following background:

Trying to survive as the Arkham Humans: We have recreated the strange world of the Cthulhu Myth in Stellaris by adding all of the Races of the Lovecraft / Smith / Derleth / etc. cycle to the game. Now it is full of strange, slave-holding, mind-controlling abominations – out to get mankind! We are playing the Arkham Humans, trying to survive this Maelstrom of Madness :) This is a Huge Galaxy with quite some advanced starts, so it may be impossible to survive while roleplaying our Diplomats. We will see…

We are roleplaying the intentions of a slightly naive, friendly, xenophile nation, so non-optimal gameplay choices are sometimes made – intentionally. In a universe made mainly of the cruel killers of the Cthulhu Myth mankind still wants to look at itself and say “we are the good guys!”.
We are also roleplaying the ingame Characters, so their preferences will be preferred (for example the specialty fields of researchers will mostly be chosen in research choices; or the personality traits of admirals will also be considered).

After meeting the Cthulhu Mythos empires, I’ll always give a short introduction into their culture and motivation in the Cthulhu / Lovecraft cycles and their connections to other races. And now started, after getting more experienced in the game, to add little quests and stories to it which will be included in later episodes.

The Playlist starts here with over 50 Episodes currently. Adding new ones daily at the moment as the game has hooked me!

Intro

First Gameplay Video

So, I’d appreciate any new contacts, people to talk/write with and also of course feedback (made a curious intro together with my wife which should be really atmospheric to watch, though it’s rather technically simple :-D) and, if you’re a fan of Lovecraftian backgrounds and the whole Cthulhu myth, you will probably enjoy watching it! Also improving it steadily after viewer suggestions and new ideas :)

Also open for modding suggestions.. like to write stories and events, as I’m an experienced dungeon master. So if anyone up there is already working on a Cthulhu mod or wants to start one… I’m here :)

At the moment, I’m house-ruling quite much of the game into making it more difficult: As individualists, we cater the empire to the suggestions of the individuals in charge – scientists will always research their specialty fields for example, if accessible – and much more. It adds even more personality to the already great game!

See you and maybe have fun watching!
When really notable changes happen, like forming a federation or an alliance, I’ll come back with a detailed post.

Sincerely yours,
Immanuel Can from Thoughtful Gaming

Pillars of Eternity Character Creation: Adonan, Aumaua Fighter and Quoril Yogsword, Pale Elf Priest

Hi guys and gals!

So, as we wrote earlier, Kevaver will be joined by his friends, a concept custom party designed for Path of the Damned (which will hopefully fare well, as this is a mostly blind Playthrough).

And to create the “basic” group, we chose two of his friends to join him early. Adonan, a tough Aumaua Fighter and Quoril Yogsword, a Pale Elf Priest of Magran.

So first, Adonan:

Race: Aumaua – Many enemies in the frontline have stun or knockdown abilities. The Coastal Aumaua ability (resistant to these abilities) is excellent against that! This enables him to better control the combat himself (and to take fewer hits of course).

Might 13
We want some Might, but he’s not a damage dealer, so we won’t spend too much on it. 13 is a pretty OK value getting a nice Fort save as well.

Constitution 18 (+1 = 19, from Rauatai)
He’s a tank. He has to have many hitpoints. And Fortitude save is the most important save for tanks too, they can take the Reflex save based Area Damage no Problem. But failing your Fortitude save will bring you in trouble as many melee opponents have abilities just against that save.

Dexterity 12
Dexterity isn’t crucial for a good tank, but it’s just so good generally. We just have to take it to bring down cooldowns and recovery times a bit.

Perception 13
On Hard we would dump this stat, as we wouldn’t have a problem hitting enemies anyways. On Path of the Damned, if your Perception is too low, you will have problems with anything combat related (if you’re not only buffing / healing). So, a compromise.

Intellect 3
The only ability we can afford to dump. It’s not crucial for a tank even though it wouldn’t hurt either. But many effects and abilities of the tank are instant and have to do with doing engage / disengages. Intellect won’t help there much. We are bleeding on the defensive Auras though, but sometimes, we have to make sacrifices for a gain elsewhere.

Resolve 18
We are playing a tank. He should have good deflection. This helps. It’s rather useless for a non-tank though.

Second, Quoril Yogsword

Race: Pale Elf. He is more resistant to elemental damage now which can be a problem even in the back row (think Fireballs or spells in general). This will help him, as he has that super low Constitution…

Might 18
We want our spells and abilites to be as strong as possible. We want to do damage too, if using weapons. This is giving us the power. What we sacrifice is..

Constitution 3
Our priest is mainly a buff / debuff character with ranged attacks. So we don’t ever want him to be under attack. He’d be dead then with Con 10 as well, so no point in going for more than the minimum. We’ll have to be careful with him though, as there are many archers and other ranged opponents in Pillars of Eternity.

Dexterity 19
Now how great is quick spellcasting, quick attacks and quick recovery time? Speed has, in most RPGs, been a crucial ability for spellcasters and, of course, healers. Pillars is no exception.

Perception 9  (10 with The White that Wends)
Not that good but not too bad either. We want to be able to hit things when debuffed. Or we want to debuff them. Buffs are more important still, but we won’t cripple our Perception totally. That would be neither helpful nor needed.

Intelligence 18
Just nice to have. A good area for the area spells and longer lasting buffs. Maxing that is mandatory.

Resolve 10
We won’t dump that as for a healer, some help with concentration can be crucial. But we won’t boost it too. As it’s really a tank stat.

Alright, I’m out – see you on YouTube in the Playthrough!

Have fun gaming,

Immanuel-Can

Pillars of Eternity, Path of the Damned, Creating our Main Character

Hi friends!

We had started a PoE Playthrough, but it was on Hard. And “Hard” was just too easy. So, we’re starting on Path of the Damned now. With a main character that should be effective, and interesting to play from a tactical and a roleplaying point of view! With a view to playing even to the second part of the White March Expansion 🙂
The first Episode is currently being rendered and we’re uploading it today on the Thoughtful Gaming Youtube Channel.

Creating a Character optimized for Combat and Exploration

So, I was thinking about a Rogue – an intriguing character with the bonus to give us a good start as well – as we won’t miss a chest with such a master in mechanics. We do want a Death Godlike, for the damage bonus on enemies on their last 25% endurance. That’s when, in my experience, most enemies will trigger special abilities too, and that’s also a critical time to do damage, for example to stop that last heal the opponent is casting and to kill him right then!

So, Death Godlike Rogue it is. What about our attributes?

Might 13
That is not too shabby here, even though the interface wants us to bring this up further. But I’d rather have the flexibility of Dexterity for massive cooldown reduction or the precision of Perception which we will need on the highest difficulty just to be able to hit things reliably.

Constitution 10
We don’t want that too high, as we won’t be a tank, but being a melee character, we cannot afford to dump this stat.

Dexterity 19 (20 with Deathfire Archipelago)
To preserve our flexibility and to give us the best opportunities. Dex is so good because it raises damage by attack speed, and it also reduces any cooldown, so it’s also great for abilities, or even reloading times. Just a great stat, even more so for ranged characters, but also for us and for some synergy with Perception and its interrupt bonus.

Perception 18
We want to be able to hit things reliably on Path of the Damned difficulty. We are fighting with two weapons, delivering great damage by that (also from the enchantments) and we want them to hit as often as possible. And interruption is a great ability for a second row melee character like a rogue. We want to be able to stop things. Now we can.

Intelligence 14
We have good abilities and want to improve them a bit. Intelligence 14 is good enough for that. We’re getting attack bonuses from our abilities, so this will improve our damage more than more Points in Might. Or so we hope.

Resolve 3
Well, we just have to dump one stat. We won’t play a tank, so we’re going to suffer against melee heavy opponents attacking us, but we will use our abilities to pummel their damage, so we won’t need too much Resolve. The will save is a pity, but no risk, no reward. And we want that reward from offensive attribute points!

We want the Blinding as our first ability as I think it’s extremely powerful, and is based on the Reflex save as well, instead of the Fortitude save, so we have a chance to blind even strong melee attackers (which usually have high Fort / lower Reflex save). It’s a protection against the hardest opponents for Kevaver, really. Making them slower won’t help there as we don’t want to be a ranged attacker and don’t want to kite.

And we want him to be from the Deadfire Archipelago, for Dexterity +1, and Roleplaying fun (a seafarer seems to be always an entertaining backstory).

Roleplaying Aspects (how will we play our Rogue in the story of Pillars of Eternity)

The old Wizards of the Coast name generator gave him the name Kevaver Forgedawn. And I’m going to go with that. It’s an elven oriented name and has a nice, gothic touch to it. I’m sure there are better names though, but also many worse.

Kevaver’s alignment, in a Dungeons and Dragons sense, should be somewhere around Chaotic Neutral, with a tendency to good. He’s got a weak spot for people sharing his fate a bit, outcasts of society. He had to endure quite a bit because of his appalling looks when he was young and, reacting to discrimination, has had his share of mainstream racism and disadvantages by local authorities. He despises authority and has a secret love for anarchy. He’s a Drifter (+1 Mechanics, +1 Stealth) which also helps him as a group utility character.

He’s a bit of a romantic, and gothic Anti-Hero, though not so much as to reduce his effectiveness much. He has acquired a circle of friends, the only ones he believes he can trust, and wants to pay for their travelling to him to help him on the adventure. (We want to create a custom group, as there are enough playthroughs with the characters from the developers.) So stay tuned for other interesting characters we will create (or, in character, re-acquire). We want a bit of freshness too, and we have quite a nice bunch of fellows prepared for the adventure.

What we still need though is a name for our group of adventurers. Are they the “Renegades of Punk”? The “Masterminds of Madness”? Even the “Freedom Fighters and Friends”? What would you call them?

Have fun gaming,

see you!
